The Broken Tankard & Nine Lives

The Broken Tankard & Nine Lives opened twelve years ago when Merrin Blackpaws bought a burned-out smithy and converted it into a drinking hall. It gained notoriety after a famous tavern brawl that sent three barstools through the front window; the town refused to let the building be condemned, and Merrin rebuilt it with salvaged beams. Over the years it became a favored waystation for mercenaries, mapmakers, and the city's less-sober literati. The tavern's cat nook began when a stray tom wandered in and curled on the bar — patrons tipped for his favor, and soon more cats arrived until the nook became official.

History

Quirks

The tavern keeps a rotating cast of neighborhood cats; they wander the hall, curl up on laps, and occasionally steal morsels. Patrons often place 'cat-tokens' (small brass discs) on tabs to claim a favorite mouser's company for the night. Brawls are regular but rarely fatal — Merrin enforces a 'no blades inside' rule and provides a bell that signals the bouncer when matters should move outside.

Lore

Old timers claim that the tavern sits above a forgotten drainage culvert that was once used by smugglers; hidden niches in the cellar walls were said to have held contraband. Merrin neither confirms nor denies it, but some nights a soft clinking is heard below — and certain patrons are careful to avoid the cellar door when the moon is high. The 'Nine Lives' part of the name comes from a local superstition that the tavern's cats are blessed: those who befriend a cat here will find their luck change thrice in a moon.
