The Black Ledger

The Black Ledger began as a small fence shop run by an ex-accountant who specialized in 'reconciling' debts and ledgers for those who preferred to remain unrecorded. Over two decades it shifted under the rule of increasingly discreet hands until Maris 'Silk' Kest bought it and turned it into a hub for thieves, fences, and information brokers. During the Gray Market Purge fifteen years ago the tavern survived a violent raid by city watch by paying the right bribes and burying evidence deeper into its foundations; rumors say a secret vault was created beneath the floorboards afterward.

History

The Black Ledger began as a small fence shop run by an ex-accountant who specialized in 'reconciling' debts and ledgers for those who preferred to remain unrecorded. Over two decades it shifted under the rule of increasingly discreet hands until Maris 'Silk' Kest bought it and turned it into a hub for thieves, fences, and information brokers. During the Gray Market Purge fifteen years ago the tavern survived a violent raid by city watch by paying the right bribes and burying evidence deeper into its foundations; rumors say a secret vault was created beneath the floorboards afterward.

Quirks

The tavern's candlelight is always just dim enough to hide faces; candles are tinted faintly blue. Patrons often place a single black feather on the table to indicate 'I am open to business' — if a feather is missing, speaking loudly about jobs is considered extremely bad form.

Lore

Whispers say the original ledger—now locked in a chest behind a false cellar wall—contains names that drove nobles into exile and once toppled a corrupt guildmaster. Older thieves tell a superstition: write a name in the ledger with red-ink and leave a black feather atop the book if you want someone's luck to sour. Some of the inked names correspond to people who later vanished, but skeptics note that most of those names were already on a number of enemies' lists. The true power of the ledger seems to be less mystical and more social: whoever controls it knows who owes whom, who can be bought, and who cannot.
