The Frosted Hearth

The Frosted Hearth began as a single room and a wide hearth built by two mountain-folk siblings who sought shelter from a savage winter fifteen years ago. When the blizzard broke, travelers found warmth and baked bread in the little house and a habit of staying for one more night turned into a livelihood. Over the years the siblings enlarged the roof, added a stable, and the Hearth became the village's winter refuge. Rumors say the hearth has never gone cold even in storms that extinguished other fires, and the innkeeper's family still keeps a folded scrap of the original roof timber above the bar.

History

The Frosted Hearth began as a single room and a wide hearth built by two mountain-folk siblings who sought shelter from a savage winter fifteen years ago. When the blizzard broke, travelers found warmth and baked bread in the little house and a habit of staying for one more night turned into a livelihood. Over the years the siblings enlarged the roof, added a stable, and the Hearth became the village's winter refuge. Rumors say the hearth has never gone cold even in storms that extinguished other fires, and the innkeeper's family still keeps a folded scrap of the original roof timber above the bar.

Quirks

On the coldest nights the inn will refuse to let a single ember dip low. Patrons take turns mending a lock of braided straw hung above the hearth for luck. The inn's cat, Bristle, steals small belongings but returns them tucked into someone's boot before morning. Coins left on the hearth are taken in by the innkeeper and used to 'keep the fire good' though nobody tracks the jar regularly.

Lore

Local tales say the ridge beyond the village once belonged to winter spirits who make bargains with mortals. Farmers whisper that leaving a coin near the hearth on the coldest night will grant a safe passage through the first snows of spring. Some old-timers claim a ruined shrine on the ridge holds a carved stone of a sleeping guardian whose face is half-buried in frost. The inn's sign shows a hearth and a sprig of juniper, a symbol the siblings chose after seeing a juniper bush survive a deep freeze.
