The Embered Crag

Built two generations ago by a pair of shepherd siblings who tunneled a hot spring into the stone, The Embered Crag started as a simple stop for shepherds and hunters. Over the years it grew—stone walls reinforced by local masons, the stable added when a toll road opened, and Haldra took it over after the original owners retired. During the winter of three years past, the lodge sheltered an entire militia company during a blizzard, earning a lasting debt with the town militia.

History

Built two generations ago by a pair of shepherd siblings who tunneled a hot spring into the stone, The Embered Crag started as a simple stop for shepherds and hunters. Over the years it grew—stone walls reinforced by local masons, the stable added when a toll road opened, and Haldra took it over after the original owners retired. During the winter of three years past, the lodge sheltered an entire militia company during a blizzard, earning a lasting debt with the town militia.

Quirks

The tavern's hearth always seems to take an ember-black feather from any fallen, unknown bird left by the window. Haldra hums a soft dirge in an old tongue whenever a storm is near, which some swear keeps avalanches at bay. Patrons are expected to chip a rune-shaped coin into the 'shelter kerb'—a chipped stone bowl—if they sleep in the common area; those who don't are teased as 'light feet.'

Lore

Local legend says the Embered Crag sits on the edge of an old elemental seam: the spring that feeds the bath is said to be warmed by a small, sleeping ember-thing beneath the rock. Superstitious folks throw a pinch of salt on the hearth before rest to keep the ember content. There's also a half-forgotten rhyme about 'the iron box beneath the hearth'—some elders believe an ancestor sealed away a mountain spirit within iron to keep it from wandering down into the valley.
