The Booming Ewer

The Booming Ewer was founded two generations ago by Borin's grandfather to provide a rowdy refuge for miners working the nearby vein. Originally a simple taproom heated by steam vents, it expanded after a rash of brawls and a favorable deal with a nearby smithing guild. Over decades it survived a bandit raid, a small cave-in and a purloined brewer; each scar is memorialized in the tavern’s stonework and the etchings above the hearth.

History

The Booming Ewer was founded two generations ago by Borin's grandfather to provide a rowdy refuge for miners working the nearby vein. Originally a simple taproom heated by steam vents, it expanded after a rash of brawls and a favorable deal with a nearby smithing guild. Over decades it survived a bandit raid, a small cave-in and a purloined brewer; each scar is memorialized in the tavern’s stonework and the etchings above the hearth.

Quirks

When a patron wins a drinking contest they get to etch their initial into a rune-stone above the hearth; many initials are layered and chipped by visitors attempting to out-etch older marks. Music is punctuated by impromptu hammer-beats—if a dwarf hammers in rhythm the crowd will cheer and toss coins.

Lore

Locals say the tavern sits atop a shallow vein once blessed by a minor earth-wight; bowls of ash and spilled ale are sometimes left at the hearth to appease him. Folktales claim that, when the moon sits low and the drinking gets loud, echoes of ancient forges can be heard and a faint, ghostly hammer will strike the rune-stone once—some say it's a sign the vault beneath is reacting to living footfall.
