The Salted Dagger

The tavern began twenty years ago as a sailors' stop called the Salt Howe. After a brutal dock brawl left its owner indebted to a small thieves' network, the tavern changed hands and purpose. The new proprietor made an uneasy truce with the town watch and the shipmasters: the Salted Dagger would be a neutral ground for those who worked the darker trades. Over time the place became a hub for intruders, fences, and information brokers. Many modifications followed: a backroom that could hide an entire crew, a secret tunnel to the wharf, and a ledger that lists debts in code. Reputation keeps the law at bay more than coin does.

History

Quirks

The house enforces three odd rules: no blood inside, no singing about specific recent heists, and every newcomer must buy a round of the house ale before being introduced to the backroom. The tavern uses a token system for favors: small carved bone tokens are given as IOUs that the tavern can cash in for help later. A black cat named Ink prowls the rafters and will steal keys or ring coins into a hidden cup - returning them only if paid or petted in the correct sequence.

Lore

Locals tell three stories about the tavern's founding. One says the original owner made a pact with a ghost of a drowned captain who still warns of customs officers. Another claims there is a sealed vault below the cellar filled with coins looted from a wreck, and the combination is hidden in the ledger's inked margins. The third and truest-sounding tale is that the Salted Dagger once sheltered an entire guild cell during a crackdown, and their names are still stitched into the lining of the tavernkeeper's coat. Those stitched names are rumored to be keys to favors that can be called in across the port.
