The Hearth and Hallow

The Hearth and Hallow began as a wayside shelter two decades ago when a pair of travelling rangers grafted an old shepherd's cottage to the roadside. Over the years the site grew into a cozy inn after the younger ranger, Selise Merrigold, settled down and married a local cooper. During a harsh winter the inn sheltered a dozen refugees and earned its good name across the region. Since then it has been run by the same family with a reputation for fair price and warm hearth. Old timbers hidden under the current floors hint at a cellar older than the inn itself.

History

The Hearth and Hallow began as a wayside shelter two decades ago when a pair of travelling rangers grafted an old shepherd's cottage to the roadside. Over the years the site grew into a cozy inn after the younger ranger, Selise Merrigold, settled down and married a local cooper. During a harsh winter the inn sheltered a dozen refugees and earned its good name across the region. Since then it has been run by the same family with a reputation for fair price and warm hearth. Old timbers hidden under the current floors hint at a cellar older than the inn itself.

Quirks

The inn keeps a small 'song tax' of one copper when a guest sings at the hearth. The house cat, Soot, is allowed to nap on purses and often curls up on maps and notes, sometimes revealing hidden scribbles when pushed aside. Patrons toss a single rosemary sprig into the hearth when making a promise; locals take such gestures seriously. The lamp in the east room inexplicably flickers when someone tells a lie in that room.

Lore

Local folk spin several stories about the inn's founder. One popular tale says the first ranger made a bargain with a road-spirit to keep travelers safe; in return the inn must keep a lantern lit in the window every night. Old-timers insist a faint, pleasing melody can be heard if you sleep in the east room on a stormy night. The herb garden is said to have sprung from cuttings taken from an apothecary's own plot during a moonless night after a bandit raid. Few can trace how the cellar came to have its soot-stained stonework, but children are told it once sheltered a group of clerics fleeing a plague.
