The Hearth and Hound

Built on the stone foundations of a former watch post that stood at the crossroads of two old trade routes, the Hearth & Hound has been in the Brindle family for three generations. It opened as a waystation for drovers and peddlers and grew into a cozy inn when Marta Brindle's parents added the second story and the stable. The inn sheltered refugees during the famine a decade ago and earned a reputation as a place where disputes are settled over ale rather than steel. In the last few years the cellar has been quietly expanded to store unexpected shipments, and whispers of hidden tunnels began to circulate after a storm unearthed a flagged stone in the courtyard.

History

Quirks

Every evening the innkeeper polishes exactly seven brass spoons and hangs them above the hearth in a precise row. Guests who remove a spoon are given an extra ration of stew and a knowing look. The keys to the rooms are stamped with little pawmarks and sometimes disappear only to reappear in odd places. Soot the cat refuses to sleep in the same room two nights in a row. The house ale is slightly different each barrel because Marta adds a single herb stalk from her garden as a signature touch.

Lore

Locals say the watch post the inn was built upon once kept an eighth-century beacon that guided border riders. Superstitious elders claim that when the hearth fire sputters in a particular way and the seventh spoon is left unpolished on the rack, an old ward is renewed. The region around the inn, often called the Greenford Road, has always been a crossroads for merchants from the northern fens and southern hillfolk. In older tales the road was favored by a smuggler band known as the Cold Sails, who used back doors and hidden cellars to move goods. Some say the Brindle family negotiated a truce and a share in exchange for safe lodging, a pact whose details are no longer written down.
