The Hearth & Heather

Built some seventy years ago by a retired ferryman and his wife, the Hearth & Heather started as a two-room stop for wayfarers. Over the decades it expanded when the nearby road grew in traffic. Mara Bramble took over ten years ago after saving the tavern from a winter's debts; she kept the ferry-house warmth but added private rooms and a small stage to attract bards and merchants.

History

Built some seventy years ago by a retired ferryman and his wife, the Hearth & Heather started as a two-room stop for wayfarers. Over the decades it expanded when the nearby road grew in traffic. Mara Bramble took over ten years ago after saving the tavern from a winter's debts; she kept the ferry-house warmth but added private rooms and a small stage to attract bards and merchants.

Quirks

A small carved wooden hare hangs above the door; patrons will lightly tap it for luck before a dice game. The innkeeper keeps an inked ledger of 'favours owed' hidden in a false-bottomed chest; she rarely mentions those entries aloud.

Lore

Local lore claims that the hearthstone came from the ruins of a nearby watchtower—some say ash from a dragon-sacked keep is mixed into the mortar. Bards like to make up tales that the wooden hare above the door was carved from the same tree as the first inn, and that tapping it can coat a roll of luck in 'the ferryman's favor.' The truth is muddier: the hare was a farewell token from Mara's sister, but superstition has grown around it.
