The Lantern & Hearth

The Lantern & Hearth was opened twenty-seven years ago by Marta's parents as a waystation for farmers and the occasional noble carriage. Marta inherited it after a bandit raid claimed her brother on the western road; she keeps a brass lantern from that time above the hearth as a memorial. Over the years the inn became known as a safe, warm stopover for those traveling between the market town and the coastal route.

History

The Lantern & Hearth was opened twenty-seven years ago by Marta's parents as a waystation for farmers and the occasional noble carriage. Marta inherited it after a bandit raid claimed her brother on the western road; she keeps a brass lantern from that time above the hearth as a memorial. Over the years the inn became known as a safe, warm stopover for those traveling between the market town and the coastal route.

Quirks

Marta pins a tiny wax lantern above each occupied room — guests believe it keeps bad dreams at bay. The sign outside is a painted lantern that glows faintly on misty nights due to a thin layer of phosphorescent lichen that draws curious children.

Lore

Local lore says the inn stands on the site of a long-forgotten wayside shrine to a minor hearth-goddess; older tiles and a buried altar were reportedly found while digging the well. Some villagers leave small offerings beneath the loose flagstone by the stable on New Year's Eve. The 'lantern glow' legend — that lovers reunited beneath the inn's painted sign will find their way back to each other — keeps the inn a popular meeting place for those hoping for second chances.
