The Ember and Anchor

The Ember and Anchor began as a cart stop outside a river crossing twenty years ago. Its first owner was a veteran courier who built the hearth and a lean-to for riders. As caravans grew and more hirelings arrived seeking work, the cart stop became a proper tavern and a favored first stop for fledgling adventurers. Over the years the place earned a reputation as a reliable haven for those with coin and those without. The current keeper bought the tavern ten years ago and formalized many of its services for adventurers: the notice board, the training yard, and a quiet alcove for fragile plans. Rumors of a buried chest under the south hearth persisted after a flood, but no one has recovered anything of value.

History

Quirks

Every evening at dusk the keeper bangs an old iron ladle on the bar three times and calls for last orders. Patrons nod and the tavern's lanterns flicker as if on cue. The barkeep keeps a single keyed coin jar behind the bar. Newcomers are subtly encouraged to drop a copper in the jar if they plan dangerous work. The tavern's cat, Ash, will steal small shiny items and leave them in the corner of the hearth only at night. Some customers intentionally buy the Keeper's Shot to participate in an old ritual called 'a vow and a cup' that binds a small, temporary promise among drinkers.

Lore

Locals tell a modest legend that the tavern sits where an old guide set fire to his lantern to warn travelers during a snowy night centuries ago. The guide's lamp is said to have burned through the longest blizzard and to have guided the first caravan that turned this crossroads into a route. Every year on the crossing's founding day the tavern hangs a lantern from the beam over the bar and gives a free mug to those who pledge safe passage to a stranger. The Ember and Anchor is known among caravan masters and guild runners as the first reliable stop on the western road, but it stays out of larger political entanglements by offering equal welcome to merchants, soldiers, and vagabonds.
