The Iron Tankard

Built on the bones of an older coaching house, The Iron Tankard stood where two trade roads met for almost a century. It began as a simple waystop for merchants and shepherds, then grew rowdier as miners and mercenaries sought coin after skirmishes to the north. Ownership changed hands through brawls, wagers, and once through a dice roll that ended in a broken table and a standing agreement to keep the peace for five years. The current landlord kept the name and an iron-bound chest with a tatty crest that no one can quite identify.

History

Built on the bones of an older coaching house, The Iron Tankard stood where two trade roads met for almost a century. It began as a simple waystop for merchants and shepherds, then grew rowdier as miners and mercenaries sought coin after skirmishes to the north. Ownership changed hands through brawls, wagers, and once through a dice roll that ended in a broken table and a standing agreement to keep the peace for five years. The current landlord kept the name and an iron-bound chest with a tatty crest that no one can quite identify.

Quirks

On the second round of ale a patron may shout a challenge and the crowd will demand a brawl or a drinking contest. The landlord keeps a small iron bell that signals 'no blood beyond this point' when rung. If the bell is taken off its hook, the staff assume an inside job and lock the doors. The staff will quietly settle bets in favor of those who tip with rare coins or stories of daring.

Lore

Old-timers say the tavern sits above a small shrine to a half-remembered war god whose worship was banned decades ago. Bits of insignia occasionally wash up when the cellar floods, and a couple of bar tiles are older than the rest, carved with symbols matching those on a weathered banner kept behind the bar. The shrine is said to grant a fleeting edge to fighters who swear by it, which helps explain why so many ex-soldiers end up drinking here.
