El Remanso del Remero

Built three decades ago by a retired river-captain named Eliseo Cantos, the inn began as a single room and a mooring post. As the village grew around branching waterways, Mariela (Eliseo's foster-daughter) took over and expanded the place, adding the bath channel and stage. The inn has survived floods and a short-lived bandit siege by offering safe harbor to honest skippers and making discreet deals with the canal-watch.

History

Built three decades ago by a retired river-captain named Eliseo Cantos, the inn began as a single room and a mooring post. As the village grew around branching waterways, Mariela (Eliseo's foster-daughter) took over and expanded the place, adding the bath channel and stage. The inn has survived floods and a short-lived bandit siege by offering safe harbor to honest skippers and making discreet deals with the canal-watch.

Quirks

The inn is dimly lit by oil lamps whose wicks have been dipped in a faintly luminescent algal oil; on foggy nights the lamps cast green halos. Patrons leave carved wooden tokens with Mariela instead of names when paying a debt; each token is stamped with a tiny boat symbol. Boats tied to the dock sometimes drift overnight and return — locals take it as a sign of the water-spirit's favor.

Lore

Locals believe the river channels around the town are watched by a 'Madre de Aguas' — a folkloric spirit who protects those respectful of waterways and misleads those who pollute or steal. Old pilings near the inn are said to be carved with tiny boat runes — if the runes glimmer on foggy nights, it means the spirit is listening. Occasionally, coins or trinkets appear on the mooring at dawn; some say the spirit returns gifts to reward kindness.
