The Black Keystone

Built where the city's first wall met the river, the tavern stands on an original keystone once set by the first masons. For two centuries it has served as a meeting place for river-hands, watchmen and those who prefer shadows over lanternlight. After a fire fifty years ago the current owner’s predecessor rebuilt the place in darker stone and fitted the cellar with shelves for bottles and secrets. Over time, the tavern gathered a reputation as a crossroads for information, a place where debts and favors change hands as often as coin.

History

Built where the city's first wall met the river, the tavern stands on an original keystone once set by the first masons. For two centuries it has served as a meeting place for river-hands, watchmen and those who prefer shadows over lanternlight. After a fire fifty years ago the current owner’s predecessor rebuilt the place in darker stone and fitted the cellar with shelves for bottles and secrets. Over time, the tavern gathered a reputation as a crossroads for information, a place where debts and favors change hands as often as coin.

Quirks

Lantern flames in the common room burn a steady blue when a stranger tells a true secret. The tavern's clock chimes once at midnight even if it is stopped. Regulars pay with tokens that Esmé sometimes reassigns to settle favors.

Lore

Whispered tales claim the 'keystone' below holds a thin barrier between the city and a narrow, cold below — not fully a grave, not wholly the living world. Some nights the city hears a faint humming beneath the streets and the tavern's blue flames flare in sympathy. Masons avoid prying at the old stone; clergy mutter about bargains and the safety of a sleeping thing. Whether superstition or a literal ward, those who have looked too long into the Whisper Cellar say they have glimpsed ledgers of other people’s lives written in mortar and shadow.
