The Rusted Anchor

The Rusted Anchor opened twenty years ago as a modest alehouse for shipwrights and fishermen. As the harbor swelled with trade — and with the illicit opportunities that follow it — the tavern grew more tawdry. Over the last decade it passed from owner to owner until Mallick 'Maggot-Eye' took the keys after a brawl claimed the previous landlord. Since then it's served as an informal hub for smuggling runs, hiring crews for questionable voyages, and settling scores away from the prying eyes of magistrates.

History

The Rusted Anchor opened twenty years ago as a modest alehouse for shipwrights and fishermen. As the harbor swelled with trade — and with the illicit opportunities that follow it — the tavern grew more tawdry. Over the last decade it passed from owner to owner until Mallick 'Maggot-Eye' took the keys after a brawl claimed the previous landlord. Since then it's served as an informal hub for smuggling runs, hiring crews for questionable voyages, and settling scores away from the prying eyes of magistrates.

Quirks

A damp gull feather is pinned above the bar; patrons believe touching it before a wager brings luck. Mallick, the barkeep, always drops exactly one coin from his pouch when a fight breaks out and the losers must put in another copper as 'cleanup fee.' Rats have a talent for stealing small shiny trinkets, usually returning them as 'tips' by placing them near sleeping patrons' boots.

Lore

Locals mutter that the tavern sits atop an old mooring stone carved with a ward once meant to calm storm spirits. Some claim the ward's sigil has been partially defaced by thieves to hide bribe marks; sailors swear that on nights of thick fog the tide creaks and the tavern's lanterns gutter as if something below is reading the notice board. The most persistent tale involves a ghostly fiddler whose tune causes men to throw dice they can't afford — though most attribute that to the house ale.
