The Chipped Pick

The Chipped Pick was founded three generations ago by a scrappy prospector named Arlen Pick, who traded a single silver vein claim for the building and a keg of ale. Over the decades it became the unofficial end point for miners coming up from Juradis' veins. The building is as rough as the people who built it: warped tables, a leaning sign and the deep gouge in the bar that gave the place its name. Chip Pickins, a half-orc whose father once worked Arlen's table, bought the tavern after saving enough from brawls and bets. Chip doubled down on the tradition of settling things loud, fast and with ale. When the mines expanded and danger increased, The Chipped Pick grew into the only place miners trusted to blow off steam and trade secrets. Rumors say the bar sits above an abandoned drift that still hums at night.

History

Quirks

Chip Pickins settles disputes by auctioning a round of ale to the crowd. The highest bidder pays the tab and declares the outcome: peace, duel, or 'drink it out' where combatants must swap sides. The crowd's vote is final and losers buy the next keg. Regulars expect this ritual and crowd-participation is part of the entertainment.

Lore

Locals swear that Juradis' deepest seams are watched. The miners speak of the Blackvein seam, a glassy ore that sings when hammered. Old-timers say the ore is a sign of the Deep Watchers and that any mine that cuts too deep brings strange weather and bad luck. The Chipped Pick sits at the mouth of several of Juradis' working shafts and has become a focal point for stories about both fortune and folly. Legends say Arlen Pick once bartered a map to a cavern of singing stone to keep the tavern open through a winter. No one has produced that map in living memory, but the story keeps the tavern's walls full of coin and the cellar full of ale.
