The Salted Anchor

Built two generations ago on a cluster of pilings and driftwood, The Salted Anchor began as a fisherwife's stall and grew as trade blossomed. It prospered under Maris's predecessor, who made a pact with a small river gang to protect shipments. After a cyclone that sank half the fleet, the tavern's owners rebuilt bigger, added the private rooms and started the Ledger to attract more discreet business. Maris bought the place with a combination of winnings, favors, and a map to a sunken chest she never fully retrieved.

History

Built two generations ago on a cluster of pilings and driftwood, The Salted Anchor began as a fisherwife's stall and grew as trade blossomed. It prospered under Maris's predecessor, who made a pact with a small river gang to protect shipments. After a cyclone that sank half the fleet, the tavern's owners rebuilt bigger, added the private rooms and started the Ledger to attract more discreet business. Maris bought the place with a combination of winnings, favors, and a map to a sunken chest she never fully retrieved.

Quirks

The tavern's bell only rings for those who have paid the 'dockage' coin; otherwise it is conspicuously silent. Patrons often leave notes and small trinkets for 'the tide' — a glass jar by the bar with strings of beads, coins and scraps of maps whose meanings change with the moon.

Lore

Local sailors tell of the 'Anchor's Watch' — a phantom bell that rings on nights when a ship from the Lost Convoy seeks harbor. The sextant hidden beneath the barrel is said to point not to true north but to 'what the heart seeks at sea.' Superstitious crews leave a coin for the tide each voyage; those who fail to do so report strange dreams of drowning and the taste of salt on their lips even on dry land.
