The Buckled Boar

The Buckled Boar was raised from the planks of a broken merchant wagon twenty-seven years ago by a band of roadwise mercenaries who decided to settle at a crossroads. It earned its rowdy reputation in a handful of short wars, serving as a mustering point for escorts and a hiding place for deserters. Over the years the tavern has traded hands through fights and wagers rather than coin. Its hearth has seen treaties sworn, lovers reconciled, and a dozen duels called off when someone louder arrived. The present keeper bought the place after winning it in a dice match and kept the old mercenary rules: loyalty at the table, coin on time, and fights out in the yard.

History

Quirks

The tavern's brass boar head above the hearth is always polished by a different patron each night in exchange for a free drink. The keeper enforces a 'one insult exposed' rule where newcomers can hurl a scripted insult at the house but must walk it back with a compliment before leaving. Occasionally, someone ties notes to the rafters instead of the notice board, as a way to leave threats or confessions where the flying pigeons from the stables can peck at them.

Lore

Locals tell two persistent stories. The first says the tavern sits on a minor crossroad of old trade routes, and that the wood in its beams came from a wagon that once carried a warlord's spoils. The second claims the original owner carved a small boar-symbol into a rafter and bound it with a blessing to keep the house full of coin. Some swear that on stormy nights the boar's brass snout warms with a strange glow. Whether superstition or something older, travelers give the Buckled Boar a wide berth on fast nights and a warm welcome the rest of the time.
