The inn keeps a greying tomcat named Brim who curls on any lap that looks too brave. Miran rings a small brass bell before closing; those who ignore it are fined a copper. Locals tell a dozen guesses about the stone beneath Thornfell's Rest. Some claim the cellar sits above an old watch chamber used by the border watch in the age of wood kings.
