The Wheatstalk Inn

The Wheatstalk Inn was founded two generations ago by the Tallman family who once ran a small threshing camp on the edge of the northern fields. As the village of Varatia grew, Mira Tallman inherited the inn and kept it deliberately plain and dependable: a place where hired hands and their employers could share a table. The inn survived a bad season, a landlord dispute and a band of raiding wolves by relying on the goodwill of harvest crews and the discreet bookkeeping Mira keeps. Over time the Sheaf Stones were set into the wall by an elder who said the stones safeguarded the grain. The inn quietly became the center for local bargaining in labor, favors and seed for the next sowing.

History

Quirks

Every night, regulars take turns telling a 'grain tale' at the Sheaf Stones. After each tale a single coin is placed on the stones and a short blessing is murmured. Mira keeps a small wooden token behind the bar that she slides to newcomers who tell a genuinely entertaining grain tale. Gambling is forbidden in Varatia and the Wheatstalk enforces this rule strictly; disputes are settled with chores, favors, or a round of honey cake rather than wagers.

Lore

Local superstition holds that the Sheaf Stones are older than the inn. People say they once stood in a field as a small boundary shrine where farmers left a coin at planting and harvest time. The tale told around the hearth is that the stones accept an honest tale about the field and, in exchange, keep vermin and blight away for the season. Varatia has strict anti-gambling ordinances, and the Wheatstalk has honored them; instead its regulars trade stories and favors. A handful of old songs sung here reference a 'brown sheaf' that will grow golden when the right story is told at the stones.
