The Thatch and Tending

The Thatch and Tending began as a shepherd's rest thirty years ago when Maren Clay, a widowed larder keeper, converted her spare loft into a place for lonely travelers to warm themselves and swap stories. Over the decades the inn grew slowly. Maren's son Finnean replaced the sod roof with thatch and added the stable. The room used now as the sideroom was originally a store for sacks of grain and was walled off after a dispute over a private wager. The building still bears scorch marks from a kitchen fire twenty years past that were never fully whitewashed away.

History

The Thatch and Tending began as a shepherd's rest thirty years ago when Maren Clay, a widowed larder keeper, converted her spare loft into a place for lonely travelers to warm themselves and swap stories. Over the decades the inn grew slowly. Maren's son Finnean replaced the sod roof with thatch and added the stable. The room used now as the sideroom was originally a store for sacks of grain and was walled off after a dispute over a private wager. The building still bears scorch marks from a kitchen fire twenty years past that were never fully whitewashed away.

Quirks

The inn enforces a 'no knives on the table' rule to keep tempers down. Ember the inn cat has first claim on any lap. The barkeep, Finnean, whistles the same two-bar tune before serving stew; patrons believe it brings good luck. The inn keeps a penny jar for 'lost travelers' where patrons toss small change each night. If a patron leaves a coin on the mantle, Finnean will tuck a ribbon to remind them of hospitality.

Lore

Locals call the inn a 'halfway place' on the route between the market town and the hill farms. Folk say Maren's first stew used an herb from a druid grove nearby and that the recipe keeps travelers from getting lost on moonless nights. Old maps sometimes label the pond behind the inn as Witchwell Pond, though most dismiss the name as a remnant of an old tale. The inn has become a favored spot for starting small quests, hiring hands, and gathering the sort of quiet information that grows into adventure.
