The Pebble and Pier

The Pebble and Pier was opened thirty years ago by Marra Underbough, a shrewd halfling who recognized the steady flow of caravans that stopped at Wyrm's Crossing. She built up the original single-story alehouse into the three-story inn it is now, adding stables and a small quay to serve merchants forced to transfer cargo before entering Baldur's Gate. Over the decades the tavern became a gathering point for traders, river folk and those who lived in the Outer City. The current owner, Marra's niece Kethri Underbough, expanded the upstairs to shelter refugees after a recent war pushed many to the Gate. The tavern has weathered floods, a fire in the smithy next door and repeated attempts by local gangs to claim it. That it still stands is testament to Kethri's bargaining, a string of good luck and a few well-placed friends in the Flaming Fist.

History

Quirks

The owner rings a brass bell with a fish carved on it to call regulars for closing. Kethri keeps a pocket-size recipe book with notes about which pasty improvements calm a nervous traveler. The inn is full of small clay pebbles that patrons drop into a jar to show they have paid a tab or claimed a favor. Cats sleep on the rafters and sometimes swipe coins left on tables. The main door often bears chalk marks that change nightly - a coded shorthand used by merchants and, on occasion, by gang lookouts. Refugee children frequently stage improvised shadow plays on the third-floor wall for a coin or warm stew.

Lore

The Pebble and Pier sits beside Wyrm's Crossing, the twin-span bridge over the Chionthar River that marks a major approach to Baldur's Gate. The Outer City around the bridge is a tangle of stables, warehouses and makeshift tenements where traders offload and refugees find shelter. The area is known for rough justice and for being outside the frequent patrols of the Watch and Flaming Fist. Locals call the tavern 'Underbough's' when they mean business and 'The Pier' when they are trying to avoid attention. Rumor ties the inn to several notable local threads: a ledger that mentions a minor patriar's involvement in contraband, and an old stone carving under the bridge that some claim wards off river storms. The tavern's reputation for being welcoming to outsiders makes it both a haven and a target.
