The Hearth and Hollow

The Hearth and Hollow was founded roughly ten years ago by an itinerant half-elf who earned coin guiding caravans through nearby badlands. Built at a crossroads used by prospectors and low-level explorers, the tavern quickly became a favored waypoint for fledgling adventurers. Over the years it survived a bandit raid and a small goblinoid incursion, both of which cemented its reputation as a practical haven rather than a luxury inn. The current owner inherited the place from the founder and expanded the stable and job board to better serve traveling parties.

History

The Hearth and Hollow was founded roughly ten years ago by an itinerant half-elf who earned coin guiding caravans through nearby badlands. Built at a crossroads used by prospectors and low-level explorers, the tavern quickly became a favored waypoint for fledgling adventurers. Over the years it survived a bandit raid and a small goblinoid incursion, both of which cemented its reputation as a practical haven rather than a luxury inn. The current owner inherited the place from the founder and expanded the stable and job board to better serve traveling parties.

Quirks

The tavern keeps a skinny black cat named Ledger who steals small shiny items and hides them under the hearth. Patrons toss a coin into a bowl each night which is later used to pay for repairs; the bowl is secretly lined with a thin rune that hums faintly on stormy nights. When someone tells a true, selfless story at the bar they get a free shot of spiced mead; lies are punished with playful heckling. The tavernkeeper rings a carved iron bell three times to call for silence before any announcement, and the regulars always stand when the bell rings.

Lore

Locals say the crossroads where the tavern sits was blessed by a wayfarer saint long ago, which is why travelers tend to find rest here even in hard seasons. Older patrons whisper of an unmarked path north that leads to the Half-Moon ruins, a place good for salvaging small magics and simple trinkets. The tavern also maintains a quiet accord with the town militia: messengers and small bounties are often funneled through the Hearth and Hollow before official channels are used.
