The Roaring Gauntlet

The Roaring Gauntlet opened twelve years ago when Brynna Halloran returned from a string of local contracts and bought a collapsed timber lot at the edge of the market quarter. Originally called the Gauntlet Inn for the old blackened iron gauntlet nailed above the door, it grew into an Adventurer's Haven through rumor and reputation. Guilds of caravan guards and small merc companies began to use the long tables as meeting halls. Over time the tavern earned a reputation for settling small disputes with wagers rather than blades and for hosting rematches of deeds performed on the road. The current layout - long tables, the weapons rack at the left door, and the sweeping bar - has been the same since Brynna rebuilt after a winter flood six years ago.

History

Quirks

The tavern uses colored ribbons to mark preferred seats - red means 'no questions asked', green indicates 'willing to trade information', and blue marks tables reserved for performers. Patrons sometimes leave small trinkets on the weapons rack as 'good luck' offerings; the barkeep files these under 'oddities' and sometimes trades them for stories. Every new moon the tavern runs a 'Silent Toast' - everyone raises a cup in memory of a fallen road-guardian and must do so in silence to receive the kitchen's 'moon biscuit' free of charge.

Lore

Local adventuring lore says that the Roaring Gauntlet once hosted a brief truce between two rival guilds when both sides were trapped in a blizzard; they hammered out terms over stew and tankards. The tavern hums with rumor and small maps that point to old bandit caves, lost springs, and toppled milestones. Seasoned patrons will tell newcomers that a worn paving stone under the third long table marks where a petty hoard was once buried - though the story is as likely to be used as a dare as it is to be true.
