History

The Hearth & Hallow has stood for forty years at the edge of the village green. Founded by Edda Brindle as a one-room waystation for pilgrims and traders, it has slowly expanded into a cozy inn run now by her granddaughter Marta. It survived a summer flood that washed out half the road and was once a meeting place for men restoring the old milestone posts after a bandit raid decades ago.

Quirks

A soot-black cat named Soot rules the bar counter and will curl up on the warmest pockets. Marta stamps a small wooden token on patrons' mugs (a 'warm' stamp) when she approves them; the stamped mugs sometimes grant a small favour from the regulars. On stormy nights patrons hum a low tune without noticing, a habit started decades ago to ward off drafts.

Lore

Locals tell of a small iron token buried under the hearth when the inn was first built—a maker's charm said to keep hearthfires steady. On All-Halloweve, villagers used to leave a slice of bread and a cup of cider on the sill for the 'road-ghosts' who visited. Some say the inn sits on a crossroads of old ways, and that those who listen by the hearth can sometimes hear faint hoofbeats of travellers who pass between this world and the next.
