The Broken Anchor

The Broken Anchor began as half of a beached brig and a creditor's notice. Years ago a tiefling smuggler named Morrin Kest bought the hull and turned it into a pub to shelter those the harbor authorities and the Gauntlet drove from other ports. Over time the place became a residence for sailors, cutpurses, exiled priests, and anyone untouchable by respectable society. The Broken Chain gang adopted the pub as an unofficial headquarters and sanctuary in exchange for staffing the door and keeping order. The proprietor pays a discreet tithe to local contacts to keep the Gauntlet's raids sparse, but the history of blood and bargains still shows: a faded scorch mark on the floor where a priest was burned in a raid, a ring of anchor links nailed above the bar after a salt fight that turned into a shootout, and a sealed cellar where an old ship's bell hangs from iron chain, rung only in emergencies.

History

Quirks

The pub enforces a strict no-fighting rule enforced by the Broken Chain and the proprietor; any raised weapon inside results in immediate ejection and a fine. Tankards are marked with a small notch if the owner is a known Gauntlet agent or unreliable payer. Music tends toward minor keys and sea shanties with coded lines; a line sung wrong can be a signal to stop a conversation. Patrons often leave charms and quick sketches nailed under tables that indicate safe times to travel the docks. The lamplight is oil-dark and prone to strange blue flickers; some say the light keeps prying holy magic from working properly inside. Finally, the proprietor will not tolerate insults about bloodlines or infernal heritage; it is a safe space for those persecuted for their birth.

Lore

Locals say the anchor bell in the sealed cellar once tolled when a captain betrayed his crew and the chain broke at dawn. Superstition grew into ritual: those sworn into the Broken Chain trace a knot on their wrist and hammer an anchor link into the tavern beam when they survive a near-death. The pub's symbol is a half-broken anchor entwined with a tail of black rope. Whispered lore tells of an old sigil cut into the underside of the bar that wards the place against divine detection, a rumor that keeps persecuted clerics coming. Some believe the Tide-Mother protects the safe dock slips, though others say the protection comes from the ledger itself: favors called in from debtors who owe more than coin. The Gauntlet calls the place a den of blasphemy. Smugglers call it home. Priests without pews call it shelter.
