The Sooted Anvil

The Sooted Anvil was founded a generation ago by Gruln's father as a tempering hall for traveling smiths and miners. Over the years it grew into a tavern and informal guildhall where contracts were exchanged as often as meals. The duergar owners kept the tavern fiercely loyal to their kin, balancing trade with ruthless enforcement of their rules. Skirmishes with slavers and bobbing alliances with surface traders left soot stains on the foundations — both literal and metaphorical.

History

The Sooted Anvil was founded a generation ago by Gruln's father as a tempering hall for traveling smiths and miners. Over the years it grew into a tavern and informal guildhall where contracts were exchanged as often as meals. The duergar owners kept the tavern fiercely loyal to their kin, balancing trade with ruthless enforcement of their rules. Skirmishes with slavers and bobbing alliances with surface traders left soot stains on the foundations — both literal and metaphorical.

Quirks

The Sooted Anvil's lamps are small glowing fungus pods that dim and brighten with the mood in the room; when a lie is spoken loudly, the nearest pod flickers. All patrons wear soot-streaked cloths and many keep iron tokens stamped with the tavern's anvil motif. Gruln collects 'favors' written on scrap iron and nails them into a ledger behind the bar — unpaid favours cause patrons to be quietly shown the door.

Lore

Local lore whispers that beneath the tavern lies an old anvil-stone, an ore vein blessed (or cursed) by a forge spirit. Duergar sometimes bind small iron charms to the stone to secure short-lived luck. Stories say the echo-well can carry a whisper from the Sooted Anvil to a forgotten forge three miles away — but only if the message is paid for in genuine blood-iron (a ritual token). The tavern's ledger is rumored to contain a page that names a duergar who once betrayed a clan and was buried alive under a collapsed shaft — that name, if spoken aloud inside the tavern, invites calamity.
