The Anvil and Anchor

Forged from the carved rock of Stonehearth Hold, the Anvil and Anchor started as a supply tavern for tunnel salvagers and prospectors. Two generations ago a traveling clan of stout dwarves took the old supply vault, opened a common hall and painted their clan mark above the door. Over time the tavern grew into an adventurer's waypoint, adopting a job board and hiring ex-mercenaries and retired smiths. The hall survived cave-ins and one small bandit siege, and its cellar holds barrels older than some local families.

History

Forged from the carved rock of Stonehearth Hold, the Anvil and Anchor started as a supply tavern for tunnel salvagers and prospectors. Two generations ago a traveling clan of stout dwarves took the old supply vault, opened a common hall and painted their clan mark above the door. Over time the tavern grew into an adventurer's waypoint, adopting a job board and hiring ex-mercenaries and retired smiths. The hall survived cave-ins and one small bandit siege, and its cellar holds barrels older than some local families.

Quirks

The tavern enforces a custom called 'Strike and Swear' where solemn promises are made by striking a small anvil in front of the bar; breaking such an oath earns public shaming and a week of free drinks for the offended party. The cook adds a pinch of iron-salt to many meals; newcomers either love it or cough for a while.

Lore

Old dwarven runes are hammered into the central hearth stone. Locals swear the runes keep the worst cave spirits at bay and bless any oath sworn within the hall. The tavern's founder once salvaged a small anvil said to have been forged by a forgotten clan saint. That anvil is kept behind the bar, and bartered favors are often struck upon it for solemn promises. Tales persist that tunnels below the cellar meet an abandoned vein with veins of pale ore, and that the tavern was built over a collapsed sanctum of a dwarven artisan order.
