The Crooked Ledger

The Crooked Ledger began twenty years ago as a sailors' alehouse near the tollgate. As the neighborhood fell into shadow, the proprietor welcomed cutpurses and songless minstrels. Over a decade the house became neutral ground for small-time thieves, fences, and those who wanted to buy back what was taken. A violent night ten years ago, when the tollkeeper tried to break the house's neutrality, ended with the tollkeeper missing and a ledger of debts burned. Since then the tavern has been run as a thieves' den by a succession of rogue managers who enforce a strict code: no bloodshed inside and no open talk of guild operations within the street-facing rooms.

History

Quirks

Mugs are stamped with a single crooked line to show house credit. Patrons often speak in clipped phrases to test for newcomers. The barkeep slides a coin with the edge facing the guest if they are being watched by unwanted eyes. A small, mottled alley cat named Ledger sits on new customers' laps as a way to mark them as observed or trusted. The house enforces a strict no-blood rule inside the main room; anyone causing a brawl is given one chance to leave before the enforcers decide what to do.

Lore

Locals speak of a set of discreet signs and phrases used inside the Ledger. They are not formal spells or rites but an oral code passed among street thieves. The place is rumored to have ties to larger fencing networks in the old quarter but operates on a low profile, keeping to petty goods and favors rather than high-born ransom. Old timers tell of the original ledger, bound in oil-stained leather, that once listed every favor owed and every debt kept between thieves. Pieces of that ledger allegedly survive and are worth as much as a gold coin to the right buyer.
