The Hearth & Hen

The Hearth & Hen opened its doors about a dozen years ago when a retired smith and his wife bought the last empty lot on the village lane and converted an old coach house into an inn. Over the years it has become a dependable waypoint for farmers, peddlers, and the occasional hired sword. The inn survived a harsh winter when the smith stabled and fed extra animals and handed out stew until spring. That act of kindness earned the house its friendly reputation and many of the regulars it still has today.

History

The Hearth & Hen opened its doors about a dozen years ago when a retired smith and his wife bought the last empty lot on the village lane and converted an old coach house into an inn. Over the years it has become a dependable waypoint for farmers, peddlers, and the occasional hired sword. The inn survived a harsh winter when the smith stabled and fed extra animals and handed out stew until spring. That act of kindness earned the house its friendly reputation and many of the regulars it still has today.

Quirks

A grey tomcat named Nibbles roams the tables and will sit on the lap of anyone who offers soft words. The innkeeper rings a small iron bell before serving second helpings as a sign of hospitality. Patrons often leave small charms or carved wooden birds in a shallow bowl by the hearth for good luck. The inn does not tolerate fighting; those who upset the peace are given a warning and, if needed, a night in the cool stable.

Lore

Locals say the inn stands where an old lantern once guided travelers through a marshy bog. Folk remember a story that the original lantern was tended by a woman who knew remedies and kept a ledger of favors. Bits of that ledger are rumored to have survived and occasionally surface among the town's folk, though most dismiss the tale as a comforting myth. The Hearth & Hen keeps a small brass lantern above the mantle as a nod to that past.
