The Crossroads Keg

The Crossroads Keg opened twenty years ago at the southern gate of the Relay Yards to serve drivers shuttling goods between Asphemor's city hubs. Rumal Kegwright bought the place ten years ago, replaced the quiet innkeeper with loud song and faster taps, and turned it into the Relay Yards favorite. Over the years the tavern became famous for putting a hot meal and a full tankard into a driver's hand before the next bell. The Keg has endured riots, a small raid by highwaymen, and one memorable pie-throwing contest that led to three new scars on Rumal's cheek and a local legend about the 'Last Pie of Ashfall'.

History

Quirks

Rumal greets every driver by name and by preferred pour. Patrons toss empty wooden tokens into a keg-shaped tip jar to request a 'run-up' refill. Fridays are 'Bellow Night' when patrons compete in loudest toast contests and the house pays out with free kebabs. Sprocket, Rumal's three-legged terrier, will steal a glove from anyone wearing a fancy ring and bury it in the hay by the wagon lot. The barkeep uses a whistle to call 'fast flags' when a driver on duty arrives, and barmaids will serve flagged patrons before anyone else. Rumal stamps a small brass chip on the wrist of regular drivers which earns them a discounted Driver's Platter.

Lore

The Relay Yards are the lifeblood of regional trade, and inns that sit at their gates often develop their own rituals and codes. The Crossroads Keg is known far and wide for its 'Run Token' system that guarantees a driver a hot plate and a full mug if they present the stamped token. Rumal's ale casks are sometimes marked with seals from distant places in Asphemor, which indicates trade agreements or, for the initiated, secret favor debts. Old drivers tell tales of the 'Night Hatch', a sealed service door under the lot used during wartime to move injured men and contraband away from prying eyes.
