The Wayfarer's Respite

Built twenty-two years ago by a band of retired explorers, The Wayfarer's Respite began as a single hearth and a stable. Over two decades it grew into a crossroads haven favored by caravans, treasure-seekers, and scouts. The original founders kept the front door unlocked to friends and the kitchen supplied free broth to those with scars earned on the road. That tradition endures. The tavern's common room still bears patched banners from the founders' campaigns and an old iron peg where a war-standard once hung. Twice the Respite has served as the staging ground for expeditions to the Ashfen Ruins and once sheltered a provincial militia during a border raid.

History

Quirks

When a patron pays for a private room they are given a small wooden 'trail token' carved by the tavernkeeper. Tokens grant a polite but firm refusal from staff if the bearer returns drunk or raucous. The tavern bell is rung three times for emergency - twice for a call to arms and once for a call to debt. The house dog, a brindled mastiff named Soot, collects fallen silver coins and deposits them under the bar each morning.

Lore

Locals whisper that the Respite stands where two ley threads cross, a subtle magic that favors travel and return. Some say the founders negotiated a pact with a river spirit to keep storms away from the road just outside the tavern. A carving of a griffon over the back door is said to avert misfortune from caravans that pass beneath it. Old-timers tell of a single night when the tavern's bell rang on its own and every candle burned blue; the next morning a cart of rare trade goods arrived with no explanation. Whether that was luck, the river spirit, or a benefactor is debated over ale to this day.
