The Hearth & Hobb

The Hearth & Hobb began as a single-room waystop forty years ago, built by a retired roadwarden who married a baker. Over decades it expanded by borrowing timbers from disused barns and welcoming every traveling troupe from peddlers to priests. Brenna inherited the inn ten years ago after her father died in the last harvest plague; she kept the ledger balanced by offering honest food and a reputation for safety on the road.

History

The Hearth & Hobb began as a single-room waystop forty years ago, built by a retired roadwarden who married a baker. Over decades it expanded by borrowing timbers from disused barns and welcoming every traveling troupe from peddlers to priests. Brenna inherited the inn ten years ago after her father died in the last harvest plague; she kept the ledger balanced by offering honest food and a reputation for safety on the road.

Quirks

The inn's cat, Knuckle, sleeps on top of the ledger and is considered an unofficial 'inspector' — if Knuckle refuses to sit by a guest the staff takes it as a bad sign. Brenna rings a small iron bell before she announces the evening's single 'no-questions' hour: any information gleaned in that hour is considered protected by inn custom.

Lore

Old roads near the inn were once patrolled by a border watch who erected small waystones to guide travelers. After the roads fell quiet, superstition grew: one of the waystones is said to mark where a watchman hid a reliquary to protect the countryside. Locals speak of a night-watch bell that tolls only when a storm gathers far from sight; they say the bell’s last keeper retired to the Hearth & Hobb and passed a whispered riddle to Brenna, meant for 'those who mend broken paths.' The inn's stage still holds a faded carving: a stylized boot and a hobnail — the old watch's sign.
