Havenstone Hold

The Havenstone Hold began twenty-seven years ago as a watchtower on the old north road. After the road was rerouted and bandit raids faded, the tower was converted into an inn by a retired company of pathwardens who favored safe harbors and warm fires. Over the years it became a meeting place for scouts, sellswords, and treasure hunters. The current owner bought the building twelve years ago and expanded the cellar into what is now the secured lockers and training yard. Local stories claim the foundations include a carved stone, the 'havenstone,' placed by a road cult that blessed travelers. Those foundations also hide old drains and a sealed passage that occasionally leaks stray rats and rumors.

History

Quirks

Every night at the hour between second and third bell the proprietor rings a small iron bell and reads a line from an old traveler's ledger. Regulars stop mid-sentence when the bell rings and either freeze or whisper a short blessing. The tavern keeps a raven named Ledger that delivers barked notes to favored patrons. The house ale is brewed with a secret herb that makes conversation bolder. Pickpockets find that their luck runs dry near the carved havenstone if they place a coin on it first.

Lore

Old hunters tell of the road cult of the Waymarker, who set carved stones at safe crossroads. The havenstone in the cellar is one such relic and was once used to bless caravans. Superstitious travelers leave small tokens on it for safe passage. The cellar's sealed tunnel is rumored to open to the ruins of a petty lord's manor. Local sages note that the shrine on the map may be dedicated to a forgotten patron of paths and bargains, and its collapse coincided with a spike in raids years ago. The tavern is considered neutral ground by many small guilds; wounds can be tended within and contracts discussed without carrying the matter to the magistrate so long as the tavernkeeper permits it.
