The Hearth and Hollow

Built nearly forty years ago by a retired border watchman and his wife, the inn sits where a small guardpost once kept watch over the trade road. History

Built nearly forty years ago by a retired border watchman and his wife, the inn sits where a small guardpost once kept watch over the trade road. Over two generations the watchhouse was enlarged into a warm, tidy inn known for its steady hearth and honest fare. The current tavernkeeper inherited the place after the original owner's passing and kept the watchpost chest as a table in the common room.

Quirks

A sleepy grey cat named Soot sleeps on the inn's accounts book when not being petted. The innkeeper rings a small brass bell before every closing to 'count the safe steps' aloud. Patrons leave small hand-carved wooden tokens for children, and it is considered bad luck to refuse a child's request for a story.

Lore

Town folk say the inn sits on the edge of an old guard route called the Graymarch. Old soldiers whisper that a small carved stone called the Hearthstone was embedded under the first flagstone to keep watchmen safe. The stone has no magic that any scholar has declared, yet storms seem to avoid the inn more often than chance would allow.
