The Rook & Ram

The Rook & Ram opened fifteen years ago as a modest coach-stop tavern. It steadily grew after Garruk bought it following a brawl that left the previous owner in debt. Over the years it has hosted soldiers between campaigns, mercs awaiting contracts, and the occasional noble who enjoys its raw honesty. The building has been patched with timbers from three different burned-out barns — hence the uneven floors and the perpetual draft.

History

The Rook & Ram opened fifteen years ago as a modest coach-stop tavern. It steadily grew after Garruk bought it following a brawl that left the previous owner in debt. Over the years it has hosted soldiers between campaigns, mercs awaiting contracts, and the occasional noble who enjoys its raw honesty. The building has been patched with timbers from three different burned-out barns — hence the uneven floors and the perpetual draft.

Quirks

A battered rook token is passed between tables; the holder can call for a free song or demand silence — Garruk enforces the rule with a heavy hand. The tavern cat, 'Bruiser', collects coins and hides them beneath the hearth. Dice games are allowed, but spirited fights grant the house 'repair fees' (paid in ale).

Lore

Locals say a mason once hid a stone with a raven's beak behind the hearth for luck; the beak was chipped off during a riot but the tavern kept surviving. Superstitious patrons leave small coins for luck beneath the bar. There's an old rhyme: 'When rooks cry at the ram's late bell, trouble rides where ruffians dwell' — often muttered when gangs pass through town. Some travelers claim the tavern sits on the crossing of two ley-lines, which explains why brawls escalate faster and strange luck favors desperate gambles.
