The Gilded Hearth

The Gilded Hearth opened twenty-three years ago when Marla Thistledown, a traveling halfling minstrel, purchased the burnt shell of an old waystation and rebuilt it with her own hands. What began as a single common room and a hearthstone salvaged from the ruins has grown into a comfortable inn prized by locals and travelers alike. The inn took its name from a streak of golden mica found in the hearthstone that seems to glow faintly on certain winter nights. Over the years the Hearth has hosted wedding suppers, treaty talks between squabbling shepherds, and more than one clandestine meeting. Marla runs the place with the blunt kindness of someone who has shared many roads and many beds.

History

Quirks

Marla keeps a small bell by the hearth that she rings twice before a new performer begins. Lads who try to perform without permission soon find their ale inexplicably watered. Regulars leave behind carved wooden tokens to trade for future meals. Every third Tuesday the inn hosts a 'Tale Night' where patrons tell true stories in exchange for a free scone. The hearthstone sometimes flickers golden when a truthful oath is spoken aloud within its light.

Lore

Local superstition holds that the hearthstone will warm the beds of honest guests and cool the ambitions of brigands. Stories claim that if two people share a mug of the house spiced mead beneath the hearth's lion fireback and swear a true oath, the vow will hold until the next full moon. Older villagers tell of a midnight singer who appears in the stage's light once a year, singing a lament that brings tears to even the hardest mercenary. Some say the inn's locked cellar once served as a refuge for rebels long ago, and that a map to an abandoned tunnel network was hidden inside a loose brick near the hearth. Whether that is true has never been proven, but treasure seekers keep looking.
