The Silver Hearth Inn

Founded thirty years ago by a retired road-warden and his wife, the inn began as a single-room wayside stop offering soup and shelter. Over the decades it grew with the trade road: Mara bought it after the last wardens retired and renovated the hearth and cellar. The inn served as a muster point during the Border Skirmishes ten years ago and bears a scarred beam from a stray arrow. Locals remember once sheltering a wounded watch captain whose dying words were supposedly etched into a stone now built into the fireplace.

History

Founded thirty years ago by a retired road-warden and his wife, the inn began as a single-room wayside stop offering soup and shelter. Over the decades it grew with the trade road: Mara bought it after the last wardens retired and renovated the hearth and cellar. The inn served as a muster point during the Border Skirmishes ten years ago and bears a scarred beam from a stray arrow. Locals remember once sheltering a wounded watch captain whose dying words were supposedly etched into a stone now built into the fireplace.

Quirks

A mottled grey barn cat named Puck surveys every newcomer; if Puck refuses to sit on a guest's lap, locals joke it's a sign to move along. Every third night is 'road-song' night: patrons pay a token and the next tale sung will reveal a rumor or secret of the road.

Lore

The Silver Hearth sits on the Old King's Road and is said to stand where a watchstone once guided travelers through fog. Old-timers claim that if you leave a silver coin on the hearth at dawn on Midsummer, the watchstone's spirit will bless one safe passage that year. The bricked niche in the cellar is rumored to be the remains of a 'warden's cache'—once used to hide messages and relics of the road-watch. Many bardic verses mention the inn as a place where bargains are struck and secrets are traded; its ledger holds more names than any single town register.
