The Embered Flagon

Built by a caravan master turned innkeeper forty years ago after a terrible spring blizzard left his party stranded, the Embered Flagon began as a single-room wood shelter and grew into the sprawling log-and-stone tavern it is now. Over the decades it became the favored refuge for hunters, miners, and traders crossing the Frostway Pass. The current owner added the second-level overlook after a fire nearly consumed the original structure twenty years ago; the rebuilt hearth was said to have been blessed by a traveling hearth-witch and has kept the Flagon warm through storms that froze the very glass of the windows.

History

Quirks

House rule: any patron who tells a true and original story gets a free mug of ale. The barkeep records debts on a line in a well-worn ledger and draws a small snowflake beside repeat offenders. Mistletoe hung from the beams is meant to be tossed into the hearth for a wish; people do it with varying seriousness. The tavern cat collects small trinkets and hides them in a crack beneath the stage.

Lore

Locals whisper that the hearthstone came from the ruins of an old shrine to a forgotten winter steward. The ember at its heart is said to be linked to a ward against winter spirits, which is why the Flagon remains warm even when drifts press against the door. Miners tell a related tale of 'the Blue Vein', a seam of ore found near the pass that carries a strange cold. The Embered Flagon sits on the trade route that passed by those ruins, giving it a quiet reputation as both a sanctuary and a crossroads for things best left buried.
