The Crooked Mug

The Crooked Mug began as a farmer's longhouse at the edge of the trade road twenty years ago. Merric took it over after a drunken card game when the previous owner failed to pay his debts. Since then it became the unofficial resting spot for drovers, guards and low-level traders. Over the years, the place accrued a reputation for fights, low justice and cheap ale rather than cuisine. Several local ruffians learned their trade here and a couple of small-time rebellions used the backroom as a meeting place.

History

The Crooked Mug began as a farmer's longhouse at the edge of the trade road twenty years ago. Merric took it over after a drunken card game when the previous owner failed to pay his debts. Since then it became the unofficial resting spot for drovers, guards and low-level traders. Over the years, the place accrued a reputation for fights, low justice and cheap ale rather than cuisine. Several local ruffians learned their trade here and a couple of small-time rebellions used the backroom as a meeting place.

Quirks

The tavern is perpetually dirty: a half-toasted fish hangs above the hearth as a 'decoration', cats roam the rafters and sometimes drop things into the ale, and patrons often throw half their meals at the 'Who's the Toughest' board where names and crude drawings mark local scuffles. Merric keeps a bell hung by the bar to call for 'last rounds' and rings it with theatrical annoyance. A patchwork of old wanted posters paper the walls, some current and some decades old.

Lore

Locals say a ghostly militiaman haunts the alley behind the tavern — a remnant of a failed muster that once marched out and never returned. Old sailors once claimed the tavern's ale was good luck for crossing the marsh; merchants mutter that those who sleep in the Crooked Mug often meet 'useful' acquaintances. The tavern sits on what older maps call 'Grantham's Spur', a minor crossroads where roads to the watchtower and the river ferry split — which is why spies and caravans find the Crooked Mug so convenient.
