The Telltale Rudder

The Telltale Rudder was founded two decades ago by a retired mate who traded dried fish for stories and shelter for a night. Built from drift timber and an old ship's ribs, it has survived a squall that took two other taverns and a small fire that blackened the back room (still faintly smoky). Marla bought the place five years ago and patched it with new planks, a strict eye for debts and an unwillingness to turn away a soaked soul.

History

The Telltale Rudder was founded two decades ago by a retired mate who traded dried fish for stories and shelter for a night. Built from drift timber and an old ship's ribs, it has survived a squall that took two other taverns and a small fire that blackened the back room (still faintly smoky). Marla bought the place five years ago and patched it with new planks, a strict eye for debts and an unwillingness to turn away a soaked soul.

Quirks

A grey tomcat named Barnacle sleeps on the ledger; whenever a sea-shanty gets loud, Marla throws a handful of salt onto the hearth. Patrons often tap the carved wooden gull over the door for luck — the gull wears a nail in its beak where locals leave a coin for the unseen tide.

Lore

Local sailors swear the tavern stands on a patch of quay blessed by a long-dead lighthouse keeper; a wooden gull perched above the door is said to be a charm against sudden squalls and losing one's way at sea. Folk also tell of the Gossamer — a merchant ship that split on the reef and hauled something ashore that no one speaks of in daylight. On certain foggy nights, regulars say someone walks the pier humming a tune that sounds like waves hitting a bell.
