The Salted Anchor

The Salted Anchor was founded thirty-seven years ago by a retired coastal captain who bought a ruined boathouse and an old bell. It began as a creaking shelter for down-on-their-luck sailors and grew into a crowded refuge for traders. Over the decades it survived at least two fires, a winter blockade, and one small naval skirmish. The tavern's anchor bell once hung on a merchant galleon's prow; it is said to ring of its own accord when a storm is near.

History

The Salted Anchor was founded thirty-seven years ago by a retired coastal captain who bought a ruined boathouse and an old bell. It began as a creaking shelter for down-on-their-luck sailors and grew into a crowded refuge for traders. Over the decades it survived at least two fires, a winter blockade, and one small naval skirmish. The tavern's anchor bell once hung on a merchant galleon's prow; it is said to ring of its own accord when a storm is near.

Quirks

When the tide is high the tavern's flagstone porch hums faintly and the innkeeper rings a small brass bell to 'settle the water'. The house cat, Sal, steals one shoe from newcomers and deposits it under the stage by morning. Patrons toss a coin into the smokehouse for good luck; the jar is kept under the bar with a smudged label that reads 'For Naela'. Performers may be invited to 'sing the tide' and earn a free bowl if they bring tears to more than half the room.

Lore

Locals say a tide spirit named Naela once favored the stones beneath the tavern. Old fishermen whisper that the salt stains on the hearth came from a sea-witch's tears. Sailors who leave offerings of coin or a length of rope report safer passages for a season. The tavern's emblem, a bronze anchor set against a salted rope, is believed by some small-time superstitious crews to ward off bad luck at sea.
