The Broken Shield

Built on the western edge of Palanthas’ market district decades ago by a retired shield-bearer, The Broken Shield began as a refuge for soldiers and traders. Over the years it earned a reputation for bare-knuckled fights and loud bargains. During the last War of the Lance, the tavern sheltered refugees and later hosted clandestine meetings for relief convoys. After the war, it drifted into the gray economy — smuggling and gambling became steady income, and the tavern found itself a crossroads for soldiers, merchants and the city’s less savory elements.

History

Built on the western edge of Palanthas’ market district decades ago by a retired shield-bearer, The Broken Shield began as a refuge for soldiers and traders. Over the years it earned a reputation for bare-knuckled fights and loud bargains. During the last War of the Lance, the tavern sheltered refugees and later hosted clandestine meetings for relief convoys. After the war, it drifted into the gray economy — smuggling and gambling became steady income, and the tavern found itself a crossroads for soldiers, merchants and the city’s less savory elements.

Quirks

A battered Solamnic shield nailed above the hearth is often the target of drunken dares. The tavern's house dogs — a brindled mastiff and a fleet hound — patrol the floor and will snatch unattended purses. A low whistle from the bar is the unspoken signal to staff that trouble is brewing; many regulars will 'help settle' matters for a price.

Lore

Whispers say the shield above the hearth once belonged to a minor Solamnic commander who disappeared during a skirmish near the High Clerist’s Tower. Old timers claim the tavern sits atop an ancient drainage tunnel used by smugglers in pre-war days; bits of broken red glass (rumored to be from dragon-marked shipments during the war) have been found in the cellar. The Broken Shield is known across Palanthas as a place where bargains are struck in shadows and debts are paid in coin or blood — a fitting microcosm of Krynn’s rougher marketplaces.
