The Gilded Hearth

Built thirty years ago by a retired caravan master, the inn began as a single-room wayhouse on an old trade road. Over the years it expanded with added rooms and a stable when a crossroads began to thrive nearby. The inn survived a bandit raid a dozen years back after the owner rallied nearby villagers; the repaired hearth bears a faint scorch mark that locals point to when telling that story. Ownership passed to the current keeper a decade ago, who kept the caravan master name and added the present cozy furnishings and garden herbs that scent the kitchen.

History

Built thirty years ago by a retired caravan master, the inn began as a single-room wayhouse on an old trade road. Over the years it expanded with added rooms and a stable when a crossroads began to thrive nearby. The inn survived a bandit raid a dozen years back after the owner rallied nearby villagers; the repaired hearth bears a faint scorch mark that locals point to when telling that story. Ownership passed to the current keeper a decade ago, who kept the caravan master name and added the present cozy furnishings and garden herbs that scent the kitchen.

Quirks

Every night at the second bell the inn's resident tabby, Ember, patrols the common room and inspects every newcomer, sometimes depositing small found items on the hearth rug. The tavern collects mismatched teaspoons and hangs them in a tidy cluster above the ale cask as a sign of family and survival. On Thursdays the lute is free for anyone who can sing a two-verse original song; the winner earns a free bowl of stew and a place of honor on the noticeboard for a week.

Lore

The inn stands near an old milestone once used by pilgrims and traders. Locals claim the milestone is carved from stone brought in from a ruined watchtower on the hill, and that on foggy nights a single lantern sometimes appears on the road though no traveler is there. Some say the caravan master who built the inn made a bargain with a road spirit for safe passage; others say the hearth keeps a protective ember from that bargain. Whether true or not, the inn has a reputation as a safe place for honest travelers and those with secrets to sell.
