The Hearth & Hound

Built thirty years ago by a pair of siblings who wanted a plain, honest inn for travelers, The Hearth & Hound began as a single room above a smokehouse. After a river flood took part of the kitchen, Marta Brinefoot took over the lease, patched the roof with her own hands, and slowly rebuilt the tavern into the cozy stop it is today. Over the years it became a crossroads for merchants avoiding the toll road, a meeting place for local craftspeople, and a neutral ground for feuds to be cooled with ale.

History

Built thirty years ago by a pair of siblings who wanted a plain, honest inn for travelers, The Hearth & Hound began as a single room above a smokehouse. After a river flood took part of the kitchen, Marta Brinefoot took over the lease, patched the roof with her own hands, and slowly rebuilt the tavern into the cozy stop it is today. Over the years it became a crossroads for merchants avoiding the toll road, a meeting place for local craftspeople, and a neutral ground for feuds to be cooled with ale.

Quirks

Marta keeps a ragged stuffed fox above the hearth; patrons toss it small coins for luck. Regulars tap the fox's nose before a journey. The tavern's sign squeaks softly whenever strangers speak of treasure—many locals claim it's a superstition, some think it's Marta's lookout tapping a wire.

Lore

Locals say the tavern was once a waypoint on an old pilgrim trail; a carved milestone now set into the garden wall carries a barely legible rune that some claim wards off bad luck. Older folk tell of a fox that guided travelers through misted lowlands; Marta's stuffed fox is said to be made from the first fox the inn's founders adopted. Whether superstition or habit, travelers who tap the fox's nose before leaving tend to return with stories rather than scars.
