Terrace Lantern

The Terrace Lantern was founded forty-two years ago by a lantern lighter named Kellan Harrow who tended the pass fires and took in travelers during storms. Built into an old watch terrace of Highspire, the tavern became a meeting point for caravans, guides, and scouts. Over the decades the building was enlarged with stone quarried from the ridge. During the Silver Winter fifteen years ago the tavern sheltered a hundred refugees from a collapsed road; several of their descendants still live in Highspire. The current owner restored the enchanted lanterns after a band of smugglers tried to steal them five years ago.

History

The Terrace Lantern was founded forty-two years ago by a lantern lighter named Kellan Harrow who tended the pass fires and took in travelers during storms. Built into an old watch terrace of Highspire, the tavern became a meeting point for caravans, guides, and scouts. Over the decades the building was enlarged with stone quarried from the ridge. Quirks

The terrace lanterns are numbered and patrons leave small tokens beneath particular lights when looking for a discreet meeting. The tavernkeeper maintains a leather-bound 'lantern log' that records who used what light and when. Staff sing a short three-note call when the pass is changing from safe to watch-only, and regulars keep a private vocabulary of signals and phrases that sound ordinary to outsiders.

Lore

Highspire sits at the throat of the Frostwind Pass and has always relied on beacons to guide traders. The Terrace Lantern occupies the old mid-pass watch point once maintained by the Order of the Guiding Light, a small group of clerics and wardens who tended lamps and blessed routes. Many in town say that the enchanted lanterns contain small bits of votive light from the order. Old travelers speak of a storybook light called the Lantern of the Way, a symbol of safe travel. Whether that tale refers to a real relic or a folk memory is debated, but fragments of the order's sigils are carved into the tavern's foundations.
