The Gilded Tankard

Built three decades ago on the bones of a watchtower, The Gilded Tankard began as a rest-stop for riverfolk and caravan guards. Branna Ironlied transformed it into a rowdy hub after buying it with a sack of harvested mana shards and the goodwill of a Sunwarden captain. Over the years it has survived sieges, a brief outlaw occupation, and numerous attempts by the city watch to civilize it. The tavern's rafters still bear scorch marks from a duel between two mages that ended with both walking away and a table that never recovered.

History

Built three decades ago on the bones of a watchtower, The Gilded Tankard began as a rest-stop for riverfolk and caravan guards. Branna Ironlied transformed it into a rowdy hub after buying it with a sack of harvested mana shards and the goodwill of a Sunwarden captain. Over the years it has survived sieges, a brief outlaw occupation, and numerous attempts by the city watch to civilize it. The tavern's rafters still bear scorch marks from a duel between two mages that ended with both walking away and a table that never recovered.

Quirks

Patrons often pay with small mana shards, glyphs, or favors rather than coin. Bar tabs are tracked by an inked ledger bound with a mana-stamp; inability to pay may lead to a magical IOU that marks one with a faint sigil visible to other tavern staff. House brawls are common on market nights; when a brawl begins a brass gong is struck and Branna's apprentices release a harmless but loud arc-spark that warns the warded rooms to secure themselves.

Lore

In the kingdom of Solara, raw magic—shards, motes, and sigils—is accepted as currency. The Gilded Tankard became known as a place where mana flows like coin: mercs come to sell pocketed motes, mages try a drink that grants a fleeting edge, and shadow-clans launder questionable shards. Local legend insists that a single, older rune hidden beneath the tavern's cellar can amplify small mana shards into usable sigils — a secret many covet and few have glimpsed. The tavern's noticeboard sometimes lists 'mana-only' jobs tied to the Sunwardens and to underground syndicates, making the Tankard a crossroads where politics, power, and payment literally glow in the palm.
