The Lantern and Larder

The Lantern and Larder was built twenty-two years ago by a retired caravan guard named Eda Lorre who wanted a warm place for travelers to trade news and for locals to gather. The inn survived one summer flood and a bandit raid in its early years. Over time it became the crossroads for neighboring farms and the market hamlet. Merrin Blackbarrel, a onetime troupe musician, bought the inn ten years ago and added the stage and the community board to keep the place lively. Locals say the inn stands where an old waystone once marked a safe route between two market towns.

History

The Lantern and Larder was built twenty-two years ago by a retired caravan guard named Eda Lorre who wanted a warm place for travelers to trade news and for locals to gather. The inn survived one summer flood and a bandit raid in its early years. Over time it became the crossroads for neighboring farms and the market hamlet. Merrin Blackbarrel, a onetime troupe musician, bought the inn ten years ago and added the stage and the community board to keep the place lively. Locals say the inn stands where an old waystone once marked a safe route between two market towns.

Quirks

A grey tomcat named Porridge sleeps on the ledger and insists on being petted before a new quest is posted. Merrin rings a small brass bell when a new notice is pinned to the board. The tip jar sits under a painted wooden pig that squeaks when coins land in it. Patrons toss a single coin onto the hearth for good luck when they leave.

Lore

Old gossip holds that the inn was once built near a small shrine to a local nature spirit. Farmers would stop to give thanks when they passed and some still leave a small loaf or a coin on the hearth ash. The inn's honeyed pastry recipe is said to be Eda Lorre's last gift from her travels. A few of the rafters carry carved initials of caravans that used the road when the inn was new. The patron song 'Lantern Light Along the Way' is known across three nearby villages and is often sung on festival nights.
