The Copper Cowl

Once a tired coaching inn at the edge of the old market, the Copper Cowl changed hands three times before Jorren Fleet rented the lease and turned it inward. What had been a place for traveling merchants became a place for traveling lies. Over two decades the inn grew a reputation as a neutral safehouse for thieves, fences, and the occasional righteous burglar. City watch rumors say the building was part of a tax-avoidance scheme; older rumors say there is a forgotten guild tunnel buried in the cellar. The Copper Cowl survived two raids, one arson attempt, and one brief occupation by a rival crew. Each time it reopened with a new code, a fresh knock pattern, and a slightly thinner cut for the house.

History

Quirks

Entry requires a short code phrase and a subtle clap near the hearth. The tavern's raven perches atop the rafters and will occasionally steal small shiny items then drop them into the hidden coin-chute. Patrons pay with clay tokens as well as coin; tokens can be traded for favors or used to cover a drink to remain anonymous. Menus are half-scratched and change phrasing depending on who places a napkin on the opposite corner of the table.

Lore

Initiates use a simplified thieves' cant in casual speech and a string of hand-taught signs when discretion is needed. The Copper Cowl is one of several such establishments across the city that form a loose web of information and trade. Old-time thieves claim the tavern sits above a collapsed drain that used to connect to the 'Crow's Hollow', an older name for a subterranean smuggling corridor. A faded mural behind the bar shows a looping crow and three dots, a symbol understood to mark a safe fence.
