The Hearth and Thistle

The Hearth and Thistle began as a single-room crofter's house two decades ago. When the old road to the market was widened, the owner, a widowed woodcutter named Brynna Thistle, turned it into an inn to shelter travelers and haulage teams. The inn grew slowly, adding rooms and a stable when more merchants started stopping on the road. Brynna sold the inn to her apprentice, Luka, ten years ago and retired to a cottage outside town. The inn has always been a meeting place for locals and newcomers, surviving a short-time bandit threat by serving as a coordinating point for the village militia.

History

The Hearth and Thistle began as a single-room crofter's house two decades ago. When the old road to the market was widened, the owner, a widowed woodcutter named Brynna Thistle, turned it into an inn to shelter travelers and haulage teams. The inn grew slowly, adding rooms and a stable when more merchants started stopping on the road. Brynna sold the inn to her apprentice, Luka, ten years ago and retired to a cottage outside town. The inn has always been a meeting place for locals and newcomers, surviving a short-time bandit threat by serving as a coordinating point for the village militia.

Quirks

Patches the patchwork cat steals small items and insists they are 'gifts'; the innkeeper keeps a jar of ribbons behind the bar to trade for returned goods. The owner rings a small brass bell to call patrons to supper instead of shouting. The inn uses chalk marks on the door frame to note weather patterns and strange visitors; locals read these marks like gossip. On slow nights, patrons are encouraged to carve a knot in the guest beam for good luck.

Lore

Local tradition claims that the oak beam over the hearth was taken from an ancient tree that once marked the boundary of three old farmsteads. Old farmers say the beam wards off ill luck and that a small carving on its underside, half-hidden by soot, is a blessing for safe hearth and harvest. Children tell stories that the inn cat, Patches, is an old witch's familiar in disguise who tests newcomers by stealing a sock from their pack.
